Helping Hersham Hounds

One of the new dogs we had the pleasure of walking. Bart.

Every week a group of us volunteer at Hersham Hounds.

Hersham Hounds is dedicated to caring for retired racing greyhounds, providing them with a loving environment and helping them find forever homes. Not only do they rely on donations but they rely on dog walkers to walk their lovely dogs.

The dogs at Hersham hounds are not used to life outside of racing and everything is new, strange and sometimes exciting for them. Our team have learnt to be very patient and empathetic towards the dogs. Alex. J is understanding when the dogs are a little skittish of his walker at first, but he is proud of them when their confidence grows and they gradually walk beside his walker and at his pace.

Not only does it help with the dogs getting some exercise, but it benefits us too. It helps with some of the people we support with their motor skills and mobility. We learn about the dog’s dietary requirements and then we go shopping for the correct food and treats for them.

Hersham hounds has been a step for us getting involved in more volunteering in the community and building our independence and work skills. We are learning how to communicate with the Hersham hounds staff and the team are doing fantastic on building their confidence . We are asking lots of questions on the care and wellbeing of the dogs and the team are overjoyed when they hear the dogs have found new homes, even if it means they will be missed.

“I like walking the dogs. They are cute” - Georgia

“Dogs need exercise like us, and I think if they could talk, they would thank us for walking them and visiting them” - Robert

“I understand they may be afraid of my walker, and that’s fine. I’m scared of things I don’t know or understand. I will give the dog time and patience and some love and it won’t be long until they are used to me.” - Alex

If you are interested in donating, volunteering or even adopting one of the many beautiful dogs which reside at Hersham Hounds, then please get in touch with them.
